Dabu Formation

Dabu Fm

Period:
Paleogene

Age Interval:
Late Paleocene, (2)

Province:
Xinjiang

Type Locality and Naming

Turpan-Hami region. The naming section is located in the vicinity ~38 km south the Dabu Station ~100 km east of Shanshan County, Xinjiang. Named by Zhai Renjie, Zheng Jiajian and Tong Yongsheng in 1978.

Lithology and Thickness

Grayish white and gray sandy conglomerate and sandstone with purple sandy mudstone and mudstone, the top of which consists of purplish red and gray sandy mudstone with sandy conglomerate lenses. The formation generally has abundant calcareous concretions, with well-developed cross-bedding and oblique bedding. The thickness is not great, ~20 m or more.

Lithology Pattern:
Conglomerate

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Disconformable contact with the underlying Late Cretaceous Subashi Fm. Regionally, there may be a Taizicun Fm of older to overlapping age.

Upper contact

Possibly a conformable or disconformable contact with the overlying Eocene Shisanjianfang Fm.

Regional extent

It is mainly distributed in the vicinity 10–38 km from the Dabu Station southward along a gully in the eastern part of the Turpan basin. As far as the present knowledge goes, this horizon is not exposed in the Huoyanshan area in the western part of the basin.
